Art statement

Artist statement
By: Vanessa Reyes

My canvass is a doll, she is very important to this art because one of Helen Keller’s first words that she learned and my sister is obsessed with them, I though it was very necessary to make it what they have in common. The way I connected them is I put their accomplishments on little pieces of paper and attach it to the skirt. This way people know what they did and do that make them resilient. I wonder what Helen Keller would think of this project and I just hope that she is very pleased. My sister Sydnee is happy and proud that I thought to do this project on her, but I am also and equally proud to call her my sister. Helen Keller is a role model of mine just because she id a strong human being. Every time I feel as if I cant do something or down about myself, I will look up to Helen Keller.

“All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” As said by Helen Keller. She was a great and amazing human being. Being blind and deaf she never thought of giving up. She and Sydnee Reyes have a lot in common. They never give up and are always optimistic. They are amazing women/ young girls and I look up to them very much.

Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, year 1880. With mother Kate and father captain Keller. She was born normal, being able to hear and see, until she came down with a fatal illness. Scarlet fever also known as brain fever, and as she got well her parents and friends noticed she didn’t respond to loud sounds and hand movements. They thought the worst. Doctors and therapists were involved and all the doctors said she was a vegetable and that she was no good. The doctors assumed that her parents would give her up and give her to a specialist. But Kate and the captain wanted more for her. So they took her to one more doctor, the doctor told them about Anne Sullivan. Being partially blind she knew what she was doing. “Children require guidance and sympathy far more than instruction.” Helen gave Anne a hard time, she kicked and screamed, she didn’t know what was going on, she was very confused; but once Anne got her to trust her… they became very good friends. Anne taught Helen to sign many things. As they got older they went on many lectures and book signing. YES. Helen and Anne wrote books. They published them themselves, they became very successful and Anne passed in October 1936 followed by Helen in June of 1968.

Sydnee is my little sister; she is 8 years old born on January 28, 2008. She was born with eczema and asthma. She was a problem child! Every night it was the same. Me and mom prying her fingers from her legs and arms. All during autumn, and when summer started her allergies started up. Flowers, pollen, cats, and dogs. We were tired of seeing Sydnee hurting herself. Digging in her skin and blowing her brains out. We wanted to do something. We took her to doctors and they all told us the same thing; put socks on her hands and aquafer and keep a close eye on her. Well when that didn’t work we had to take measures into our own hands. Made phone calls, sent emails, went to lotion specialists, and we finally got a break through. They doctors wanted us to try this cream. It was a special kind of cream. IT WORKED! Ever since 2004 Sydnee’s skin has gotten better and smoother. We are all very happy. Her asthma has not cleared up. she is the only girl in her class that has to use an inhaler. All the other kids “ohh” and “awe” over her use for it. We are extremely happy for Sydnee and a load was lifted off of our backs.

Helen Keller and Sydnee Reyes are very similar. They are extraordinary people and should be looked up to. Both have over come major problems and have come back better than ever. Although Helen couldn’t see and Sydnee has more of skin condition, they both are very resilient people. They inspire me to live beyond I can do, and be all I can be.

JUROR REFLECTION

JUROR PARAGRAPH.
By: Vanessa Reyes

Some of my strengths in this project were that the book was easy to read. I think that if you know how to read and get the story/ book/ novel then you can do anything with that information. But some of my weaknesses were trying to get my bias opinion and become a juror that has no prejudice feeling. At first with the 1st round of the jury selection, I thought that it was fine to have the boys alone on the island as long as they had a good structure and good leaders. The defense attorney thought that was a bias opinion and they kicked me off the jury. But the 2nd time I tried out for the jury I was a nurse and had didn’t have any problems with my biasness. We as the jury [all 12 of us] had the same opinion, Jack Merridew is NOT guilty. The prosecuting attorney didn’t use their evidence and there was no real evidence showing that Jack killed Simon and Piggy. We decided that Jack wouldn’t be sentenced with Manslaughter. I think if I had chosen to go the opposite route and have gone against them we would have a hung jury. But I went with my gut and Jack is now free. I think on this project I deserve an A. I deserve this grade because I had fun, I gave in my all to everything I did.

Short Story Relflection

One day a few summers ago I picked up a book, never touched it again until a few weeks ago. It was by R.L Stine. It was about a set of twins that weren’t all that popular go out with a boy, at the same time! One twin knew that he was dating her sister but still went out with him. A book about puppy love and betrayal, this book will keep you on your toes and never keep your heart from being. This book is now my most favorite book. That is how I got my idea for my book. But mostly I thought of my own problems and if when I get so mad… on what I want to do to the people that are doing this. I had a dream once that I was stabbing someone with something. But I can’t remember what it was. So I embellished.

At first I had to think of a theme. A genre, and then what direction I wanted to take. I thought of taking it into a popular direction and have the mean girls a big roll. But then I decided to take it into perspective a geeky girl. I wrote my 1st draft and then had someone review it. When they did that I went back and changed it up a little. Then again I had someone look over it. And now I’m on my 3rd draft and still correcting.

For publishing I am going to send it into a teen girl magazine and then I’m going to publish it into a local library and Ms. Staff’s library.

Short Story Project

In this project we had to think of a learn Freytag's Pyramid, think of a theme and write a short story. My short story is based off of a book DOUBLE DATE. This is a Fear Street Book by R.L. Stine. This book is about a boy who has everything and a girl that likes him. he starts dating her but also starts dating her sister. AT THE SAME TIME! well they eventually they kill him. So i wrote a story that is based off of that.

HERE IS A PARAGRAPH----->

The next day all I could do was think of him! The date, the snails, the sand between my toes, the moon on the water, everything was just so… perfect! I couldn’t wait till Monday! He would wrap his arm around me and I would be his… GIRLFIREND. It sounded great to say it out loud!
“Girlfriend…Girlfriend…”
Ohmygosh! There he is. Don’t be too anxious. Don’t make it look obvious that you were thinking about him all weekend.
“Hi Jay.”
“I’m sorry, have we met?”
My heart broke into a million pieces. He walked past and all his friends laughed, and high-fived him. How could he do this to me? Running to the bathroom tears started running down my face. What could I have done to make him so mad at me? There was no one in the bathroom but it seemed so full and loud. I felt like I couldn’t breath, like someone was sitting on my chest and they were having fun watching me suffocate. I looked at myself in the mirror I didn’t like what I saw! It was u-g-l-y Julie. It was a girl who fell for a guy she never had a chance with! I walk alone in the hall and hear my sniffles. I walk and hear distant laughing in the back; just yesterday I thought that that would be me and Jay. All my teachers asked what was wrong, all I said was, “Its not important.” But in reality it was breaking me up inside.

Paying it Forward

So the first thing i thought was, "I want to help someone" so I was think like helping the homeless or donating money to a charity. And then when I was at the store it really struck me! There was this little old lady trying to get these drinks for the very top shelf but could not reach. So then I got the stool and got them for her. After that I just felt so pumped so then I helped her get her other groceries, then I helped her to her car. She was not only grateful but very happy. I think that made her feel very special, and happy. I didn't tell her about pay it forward only because I didn't know I was paying it forward till after she had drove off. After this I felt really good about myself and I wanted to do more. So I started doing little stuff around the house and even though its not the same, i do feel good.
Attempt no. 2
Over the break I did a beach cleanup, at dog beach. Prudential hosted a beach clean up and I volunteered. I spent 3 hours there with my little sister and mom. We picked up almost 100 cigarette butts and over 30 band-aids. IT WAS DISGUSTING! We really learned the importance of keeping our beaches clean; they even gave a lesson on how pollution kills the animal life and makes the ocean air even more gross. I felt good after the beach clean up, even though I did have to wake up at 9:00 on a Saturday. But I did get a free t-shirt and breakfast. However I heard that the week before we did the cleanup there was another one. Which was ok because there needed to be 2. THERE WAS A LOT OF TRASH!

Attempt no. 3
During the break I held a babysitting service with a few of my friends. We didn’t get paid and did this for parents who had to do last minute things and didn’t have anywhere to leave their children. So me and a few friends set up this service that if you had a kid that needed a place to go all you need to do is change them before you drop them off and feed them as well. In our daycare they took naps were fed lunch and got to color, watch television, and go outside and play. While they were sleeping we called their moms to see how long they were going to be. It was really fun. We didn’t get paid, but we had a really good time playing with the little kids.

Feature cast from the Past

Project Purpose:
To understand the difference between Cause/Effect Relationships and Correlations. To understand how and why major events in history are connected and intertwined (think yarn activity!). To research a major event from U.S. history in order to understand why it is significant and how it relates to other major events. To understand features of a feature article and podcast and to be able to create a feature article or podcast about your major event in history.

Project Requirements:
To present the 5Ws of your major event to the class. To write/peer edit/revise a feature article or podcast. To have at least three drafts in your Writing Portfolio. To present a polished version of your feature article or podcast on Media Night, as well as posting it online to our Team Featurecast from the Past web page (made by James).

Specific Concepts Learned:
Include at least two concepts. Be specific about the information/research/differences between correlations and cause/effect relationships that you learned. You should be able to explain the significance of your event (include specific facts) or give an example of a correlation and a cause/effect relationship between your event and another significant event.

Challenges:
At first with this project I had to figure out who i was going to interview, then when i finally did I couldn't anyone to play my person. [[ very stressful ]] I found making the script was fairly easy. Only because i listened to many podcasts.

http://staff.htmma.hightechhigh.org/%7Ecstaff/podcastproject/FeatureCast_Template/FeatureCast_PG1.html
you can listen to all of our pod casts and view all of our feature articles on this website.

Real-World Significance:
i found that the Real-World Significance was that we learned about our history, and we learned how to make a podcast/ feature article. There are things that i knew nothing about, that i finally got to learn.
